So far, the Sunshine State.... isn't. Not that I'm complaining. A vacation is a vacation, no matter how wet, but the rain is a regular performer here.
We're in the panhandle of Florida this week, in a beach house, enjoying the precipitation. We did have several short trips to the beach yesterday, in between cloudbursts, and have learned many new things.
- There's a species of jellyfish that is essentially immortal.
- A sting from a box jelly can be fatal within minutes.
- Jellyfish tentacles can continue to sting hours after detachment.
Can you tell what's been blooming in the surf? All this came about because we kept seeing little bioluminescent creatures washing up on our night time beach walk last night and came to find out they were baby jellies. Adorable, really, but so far the daughter has five stings over a two day period and sees them as somewhat less adorable and maybe the first animal she's really not that interested in protecting.
